Disc Golf Course to Open in Ladera

Ladera Ranch residents will soon have a new outdoor amenity to enjoy – a nine-hole disc golf course.

Update: Disc Golf Course Opening

Work on the first and only Ladera Ranch disc golf course is well underway, with modifications to the landscape and irrigation in progress and the course layout receiving a final review. This work is expected to be completed soon - once final landscape modificatins are completed. The LARMAC Board appreciates the feedback received from residents regarding this new sports amenity, and thanks all residents for their patience while the planning and installation work continues.

Opening day for the disc golf course will be announced as soon as it is available, via the weekly eNewsletter, Ladera Happenings.

=============

February 17, 2021 – Ladera Ranch residents will soon have a new outdoor amenity to enjoy – a nine-hole disc golf course. As residents seek new ways to enjoy the outdoors, this addition by LARMAC is a welcome attraction that appeals to all age groups including children, teens, adults and active seniors.

The executive-style course has shorter distances than typical courses for faster play and is located in the passive greenbelt open space between Sienna and Cambridge (across from the orange groves) in Covenant Hills. It runs along the Yukon Riley trail which under the SCE power lines and beautifies the construction access road that is used for the build out of the last remaining open lots in Ladera Ranch. Designated street parking is available along Cambridge. The casual play course was designed by West Coast Disc Golf and worked closely with Jeff Spohr, a former pro disc golfer who designs courses, manages professional disc golf tournaments, and advises municipalities on disc golf course design.

LARMAC Board President, Chase Fitzpatrick, notes that the course was designed with alternate positions for each hole to keep the course fresh by alternating the locations of the baskets – similar to moving positions of holes on the greens in golf (e.g. from the front to the back of a green).

LARMAC’s Operations Team, which includes a maintenance crew, installed the disc catchers (holes) in order to minimize costs. The investment in the equipment and consultation was just over $5,500 and was paid from operating funds.

Safety
The course was designed with safety in mind. It has designed so that players do not need to throw discs over pathways which are designated as out of bounds and landing on one will add +1 to a player's score. Holes (baskets) are located so that players are throwing away from homes and because it's an executive, quick play course, the distances between the tee area and holes are shorter and don't require long throws. Residents playing the sport should familiarize themselves with the proper equipment and game etiquette which includes waiting for non-players to safely pass by, allowing players ahead to complete their hole and move out of the area of play before throwing a disc.

Parking
Parking is allowed on Cambridge (across from the orange groves) which is the street closest to holes 1 and 2. Because parking is limited LARMAC encourages players who plan to play a game together to use the trail system to walk or ride a bicycle in lieu of driving to use the course.

Access
The disc golf course is located within the gated community of Covenant Hills. As with all LARMAC property and amenities, including the park and the disc golf course, use of these amenities is limited to Ladera Ranch residents and their guests only. Residents are permitted to play with a guest, however the guest must be accompanied by the resident at all times. Residents must have their valid access card with them at all times.

Rules
The rules for use of LARMAC-owned parks, playgrounds and common areas apply to the use of the disc golf course. Residents are asked to be respectful of other neighbors, ensure the care of the equipment and course while using them, and being mindful of speaking volume to allow other players to concentrate and maintain the peace of the surrounding neighborhood and homes.
