Dear Ladera Ranch Residents, 

We want to share an update following the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee established by the LARMAC Board of Directors to review the Association's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. 

The committee, comprised of community members and two Board members, met for about two hours on August 4 to further review the Association's current IPM program and identified initial recommendations. LARMAC staff, legal counsel and landscape experts were present to provide information and support the committee's discussion. 

The committee reviewed and discussed ongoing efforts to maintain Ladera Ranch's landscapes while balancing environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and long-term fiscal responsibility. The committee discussed current maintenance practices, fire safety requirements, and opportunities to continue reducing reliance on traditional weed control methods. 

A key discussion focused on the community's ongoing acacia removal program, which is required to meet Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) standards. As these projects create newly planted open areas that are more susceptible to weed growth, the committee supported moving forward with a pilot study beginning this month. The study, which is expected to continue into spring 2027, will evaluate several landscape management approaches—including mulch, granular pre-emergent applications, and organic treatments—to determine the most effective and sustainable method for reducing weeds while supporting healthy plant establishment. The results will help guide future maintenance practices as the community continues refining its Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. 

The committee also discussed enhancements to resident communications, including clearer treatment notifications, improved educational resources, and more regular updates on landscape initiatives. Additional recommendations and updates from the pilot program will be presented to the Board as the community continues to refine its long-term Integrated Pest Management program. The next committee meeting is scheduled for August 24.  

Over the coming weeks, the committee will continue evaluating the current program and developing practical, phased recommendations for consideration by the Board of Directors at its September 9 open session meeting.
