Ladera Ranch Teen Goes Big on Eagle Project

Andrew Froggatt knew he wanted to combine creativity and fun when considering ideas for his Eagle Scout Service Project.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program by the Boy Scouts of America. Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank.

For his Eagle Project, Andrew was required to select a project incorporating his leadership and project management skills while fundraising and collaborating with the organization that would benefit from it.

Andrew approached Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (LARMAC) with his idea of installing a Giant Chess Board and playing pieces at one of the parks in the community. He presented his idea to LARMAC General Manager Ken Gibson and eventually the LARMAC Board of Directors.

Andrew proposed modifying a planter with decomposed granite, which would provide the base for the chessboard and provide residents with an excellent level surface to walk on.

LARMAC identified Mission Hills Park in Covenant Hills as an ideal location. The park was scheduled to be renovated since its amenities, which included a putting green and play structure, had reached the end of their useful life and would need to be replaced. The large chess set would complement those amenities and be an excellent addition for residents.

The dimensions of the large chessboard were 8’ x 8’ and made up of 12” x 12” tiles. The chess pieces ranged in size range, with the tallest piece being the King, measuring 25” tall, and the smallest piece being the Pawn, which is 16” tall.

Andrew successfully raised $1,000 to purchase supplies and chess pieces for the chessboard. He also enlisted the help of 20 volunteers to install the board and presented the final project to the LARMAC Board during the September open session meeting.

On September 6, Andrew attended the ribbon-cutting of Mission Hills Park along with LARMAC Board members and staff.

When Andrew was asked what he would like residents to know about this project, he said, "I'd like people to know what a great program Scouting is and that this project was done as part of this program that teaches responsibility, leadership, and how to be a contributing member of a community."

“The chess board was a very nice addition to the Mission Hills Park renovation project. Ladera Ranch residents will enjoy the chessboard and game for years to come. It was a pleasure to work with Andrew. He is a terrific young man who led the project and communicated in a way that reflected well on the Eagle Scout and BSA organizations. We wish him the best,” said Ken Gibson.
