LARMAC Makes Installing Solar Panel Systems Easy

As interest in sustainable energy solutions has grown, Ladera Ranch residents have opted to install solar systems, a cleaner, more efficient energy source that saves homeowners money.

To help homeowners take advantage of solar energy with minimal time and effort, LARMAC has introduced pre-approved guidelines for solar panel installations. The checklist on page 25 of the Aesthetics Standards Guidelines allows owners to install solar systems on their homes without going through the standard aesthetics review process. The standard process requires oversight and approval by the master association’s Aesthetic Review Committee.

Kristy Pennington, LARMAC Aesthetics Review Coordinator, says, “The LARMAC Board adopted the pre-approved guidelines for solar systems based on the reliability and consistency with which solar contractors have installed systems over the past five years. Because of this, ARC is confident that following the checklist ensures compliance with LARMAC’s aesthetic standards.”

Pre-approved guidelines for solar panel systems

  • The design and location of the solar energy system meet the requirements of all applicable governmental ordinances and are installed in accordance with the LARMAC Aesthetic Standards.
  • The energy system must be integrated into the roof design, match the roof slope, and be designed to minimize the profile of the collector.
  • Support for solar equipment, which includes batteries and/or power outlets, should be enclosed and screened from view from the street and LARMAC common areas.
  • No silver frames may be used.
  • Solar equipment must be designed to be integral parts of the roof. Their form and location must be compatible with the existing roof.
  • Solar panels must be low-profile and match the house roof pitch. All tubing, wiring, etc., must be concealed as much as possible. If exposed, it must be painted to match the adjacent surface. The color of solar panel frames shall be black or compatible with the roof color.
  • The solar installation design should maximize a contiguous installation of the panels.
  • To the extent feasible, homeowners should incorporate low-profile vents to permit installation that is as contiguous as possible.
  • All mechanical equipment exposed to the exterior shall be in a manner that minimizes visual and noise impact.

Any deviation from these guidelines requires homeowners to submit a plan to the LARMAC Aesthetics Review Committee for review and approval prior to commencing the work. This ensures that all solar installations within the community uphold the established standards of aesthetics and functionality.
