- Transitioning from a Community Garden...
We are excited to announce that the Heritage Garden is about to enter an exciting new chapter! After 20 plus years of managing the Heritage Garden, where individual plots were tended to by a small group of residents, we are planning to transition from a community garden to a community farm. The intent is to bring more support and resources to the space as well as increase resident engagement and satisfaction.
Over the years, LARMAC has had the luxury of learning what works well when it comes to a community garden, and what doesn’t work so well. When Ladera was first built, the developer had a design vision that included communal spaces surrounded by nature and preserved open spaces. Their mission – “Take care of the land and the land will take care of you.” Fast forward 24 years and you see developers of master planned communities taking it a step further by creating communal spaces with a focus on health and wellness that serve as many residents as possible.
Later this year, we will begin shifting to the beginning stages of a professionally managed community farm. The first step – redesign the space. This effort will be led by Farmscape, a professional company with experience in sustainable gardening and community-based agriculture.
What you can expect:
- Professional Care & Maintenance: With the farm under the management of a professional team, you can expect more consistent care, expert advice, and improved functionality of the garden.
- Shared Resources, Less Work: Gone are the days of maintaining individual plots! The managed farm will focus on larger collective growing efforts, offering more opportunities for all Ladera residents to enjoy the fruits of our labor without the individual upkeep. It’s a chance to enjoy gardening and farming without the maintenance worries and keeping track of when you last visited the garden.
- New Experiences & Educational Opportunities: Learning more about gardening, sustainable farming practices, plant health, etc. has many mental and physical benefits.
- Stronger Community Connections: With a managed farm, there will be more community events, volunteer opportunities, healthy eating, and more.
We believe this change will bring significant benefits to the Ladera Ranch community, and we want your input on this exciting project. Whether you have a green thumb, love fresh produce, or want to get involved in this exciting community project, this is your chance to help shape the farm’s future. Please take a few minutes to share some details about your gardening interests in the Heritage Farm Planning Survey and let us know if you’re interested in joining a task force made up of five (5) homeowners/residents.
To learn more about the task force, please review the Heritage Farm Task Force Charter outlining the roles and responsibilities. LARMAC will be accepting interest forms until Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 4:00 p.m.
