CPR Certification for Teens

Teens are finding that being CPR-certified gives them more confidence and helps them feel better prepared for babysitting jobs.

Article by Emma Megerian, Communications Chair, Teen Leadership Council

For the last seven years, Christy Gochez has been offering community classes on CPR and First Aid. As a mother and a midwife, Christy wanted to educate herself on basic life support skills but found that many of the courses offered were too rigorous and time-consuming. This led her to the creation of several short and local classes that teach CPR certification, choking, AED heartsaver and First-Aid certification

While these courses are vital to everyone, First-Aid knowledge is especially important for teens who take babysitting jobs or who have younger siblings. Teens are entrusted with a myriad of different responsibilities, and receiving any form of First-Aid certification is a wonderful way to step up to the plate. Furthermore, parents feel safer leaving their children in the hands of a teenager knowing that they have the knowledge and experience to help their child in an emergency situation.

Christy’s CPR and choking relief classes are for all ages. Participants use mannequins for hands-on practice, AED machines and Epipens, as well as learning how to care for wounds. These classes last about an hour and a half and at the end, students receive a printed certificate that can be renewed every two years.

Being CPR certified helps teens land babysitting opportunities by differentiating themselves from other babysitters who are not certified. It also helps teens feel empowered and confident knowing that they are better prepared to assist if needed.

We as a community, especially one with such a high presence of families and children, are incredibly lucky to have Christy providing us with the incredible opportunity to become educated in a way that could help save lives.
