Lifelong Passion Builds Community in Ladera

As the on-air host of Stein Time, a Ladera Ranch lifestyle-focused podcast, Carl Steindler is living his dream. Since his days of listening to shock jock radio while riding in the car with his dad, his intrigue and love of radio have stayed with him. Today, Carl, a Ladera resident, combines his love of radio with the love of his community to do a podcast show focused on the people, aspects, and lifestyle of Ladera Ranch.

Roots and Wings Online staff met up with Carl Steindler at his home studio to learn more about him and the appeal of this home-grown, community-focused podcast.

R&W: What inspired you to start a podcast focused on Ladera?

Carl: Stein Time is a pure passion project that merges my love of talk radio with the love of my community. Since I was a kid, I've been intrigued with AM radio, and the development of recent technology made it possible for me to start my radio show.

Of all the podcasts, none were truly centered around the community itself. I felt that I had something unique, and with so many young families and awesome people in Ladera, I wanted to make something where the everyday person – man or lady could be the star - with the idea of simply helping neighbors get to know each better along with aspects of the community.

Nestled comfortably behind the Orange Curtain, we are one unique bunch in Ladera!

R&W: What is the format for the podcast?

Carl: There is no set formula for the show, but I do have some elements that I include: Life Pro Tips, Ladera Pro Tips, Today Learned (TIL), Urban Dictionary Words of the Week, and then some random other ones that'll make appearances including news tidbits I find interesting.

The show is really about getting to know one another. The elements I mentioned are just there as a jumping-off point and for some consistency for the listeners.

R&W: What has Stein Time been like so far?
Carl: Pure fun! This is a pure passion project. I love it when friends or past guests text me and reference something I said in the show. The support and stoke I'm receiving have been mind-blowing, in the best way possible.

The show is half art project, half oral history. Ladera Ranch is a unique place and needs to be documented.

R&W: What are your top 3 Ladera Pro Tips?

Carl:

1) Always smile.

2) Always turn right when stopped at the Cecil Pasture red light if you can do so safely. (Yes, I know what the sign says, but let's really think about this!)

3) Please listen to my podcast, be a guest, or send me guests

R&W: How'd you discover Ladera Ranch?

Carl: Pure happenstance. My family was living in Laguna Niguel. As our family grew, our housing needs changed. I was reluctant to move. At the time, I was adamant that we would pay the most anybody would ever pay for our home in Ladera. Despite being five minutes from Salt Creek (I could smell the salty air), as they say, "A happy wife makes for a happy life."

Needless to say, it all worked out, and we did ok on the house (my wife loves to remind me of that). Moving here was the best thing we've ever done for our family. It's the bubble within the bubble!

R&W: What's your day job?

Carl: I am a Real Estate Agent and Mortgage Loan Officer.

R&W: What is the inspiration for the podcast graphic?
Carl: Growing up, I got the nickname Stein or Steiny (the first five letters of my last name). My middle name is Frank (no joke), so, in elementary school, I'd write "Carl Frankensteindler" on my Trapper Keepers. So, that is exactly who the logo is!

I created the graphic in about an hour and $15 in credits on DALL-E, an AI art generator. I'm seriously big on AI. I use different aspects daily to streamline aspects of my occupational life and processes.

R&W: Most memorable Ladera event?

Carl: Getting my seats on the morning of July 4th at Founder's Park. It's absolute pandemonium. This year I plan on painting my face like Braveheart. I think it's the greatest spectacle one can experience – fully grown men and women acting like absolute Vikings at 6 in the morning. Bar none; nothing beats it! It may even overshadow the fireworks show, which is probably my second favorite after the Summer Concert series

R&W: 5 music tracks that would make it on your life soundtrack

  • Juicy (Biggie)
  • Badfish (Sublime)
  • That's All (Genesis)
  • Career Opportunities (the Clash)
  • Anything by the poet, 2Pac

I love music, so these are just the tip of a four-day playlist.

R&W: What Ladera term would you add to the Urban Dictionary?

Carl: Blusterschmuck (Noun) A person sitting at the red Cecil Pasture light waiting to make a right turn while there is no other soul or vehicle in either direction or even near their side of the road.

This, in turn, makes the light go red for every genuine, law-abiding citizen on the other side of the road for no apparent reason.

"You, my friend, are a Blusterschmuck! Because all you're doing is being a schmuck and contributing to the cluster that is that light, being a bluster."
